Be Strategic About Workplace Culture – It’s a Sound Investment

In most organizations, company and team culture forms organically rather than intentionally. It often carries forward historical worldviews, deep-seated patterns, and even trauma, within the company. This means that counter-productive behaviors and actions can take root and be amplified by the stories that people tell about their experiences with their managers, supervisors or direct reports, and of trust and relationship throughout the company.

Lots of Opportunity for Improvement and Engagement

A Towers Perrin 2012 Global Workforce Study found that, around the world, 26% of employees were disengaged, 17% were detached, 22% were unsupported and only 35% were highly engaged. This points to a tremendous amount of opportunity. Engagement of employees, and internal and external stakeholders, is a characteristic of a strategic and healthy workplace culture.

Being strategic about creating, sustaining or enhancing a positive, productive, healthy workplace environment inspires people to share the stories that highlight the value of working in their organization. Research demonstrates, over and over again, that companies that have goals and strategies that genuinely include engaging people so that they feel recognized, acknowledged and valued and where they feel like they have some say over decisions that affect them, perform better on every indicator.

Engagement Methods and Practices

What are some ways to engage people well? There are methodologies like World CaféOpen Space TechnologyCircle Practice and Appreciative Inquiry that provide these kinds of engagement practices. And the methodologies, in and of themselves, are insufficient. The way that people plan for and host the methodologies can be just as important, if not more so. This is all explored in the Art of Hosting or the  Art of Participatory Leadership.
