AI – It’s Not Just One Thing

We continue to explore the intersection between Healthy Workplace Culture and Artificial Intelligence (AI) – and there sure is a lot to explore! In the explosion of the use of AI and the corresponding vast improvements in even what the free versions can do, many people and organizations are using AI more, and often more haphazardly than consistently – or with intentionality.

We are aware that the term AI is used pretty generically but it can mean a lot of different things. Reading through any article on artificial intelligence you will find the initials AI used in a general sense to refer to all forms of artificial intelligence. Yet, these articles are often referring to a specific use or form of AI. For example, we are engaged in a dialogue with a company that has developed a very useful AI assistant based on analytic theory persona, which is a specific form of AI.

With all the variations of AI out there, we have found it helpful to refer to clarifying definitions as a way of understanding worldview references and perspectives related to AI.

How Different Forms of AI Fit Together

In the workplace, an AI program could be a resume screening tool that uses natural language processing to rank job applicants. An AI platform might use IBM WatsonX or Microsoft Azure AI to develop internal chatbots or predict project risks. An AI scheduling assistant could book meetings based on calendar availability. And an AI persona might be a workplace wellness chatbot with a calm, supportive personality that checks in with employees.

Understanding the differences in AI forms or tools can help you or your organization choose the right tool and strategy – do you need a platform to build something or a ready-made assistant? It can help align expectations – is it solving a problem or creating an interactive experience? Or help design responsibly – AI personas, especially, can affect user trust and engagement deeply.

In our next blog post we will explore the debate regarding the impacts of AI. Are they good, bad or somewhere in the middle.
